We are currently working on the following projects.
Ban Lad Hane Secondary School: N20 05.450 E102 07.954
This new secondary school was completed and opened a year ago. The project was sponsored by Wunderman, a global Digital, Data & Direct communications company and will be known as The Lester Wunderman School in honour of Wunderman’s founder. We are currently raising funds to pay for desks for 150 students.
The old school is the building on the far right, that was in desperate need of replacement. There were 360 students trying to study in 6 classrooms that are each only 40m2, with dirt floors complete with large black scorpions, bamboo walls and a leaky roof. Lessons are written on their desk tops.
As this is only one of the two secondary schools on a 150km stretch of the river, many of the students come here from neighbouring villages along the river, and board at Ban Lad Hane in crowded dormitries. (Can be seen at top of picture in the middle).
As of April 2010, the foundations for the new school have been dug, the footings have been poured and construction has started with the delivery of 40 tonnes of cement, rebar and roofing delivered upstream from Luang Prabang.
Ban Hatteu: N19 55.613 E101 42.216
The villagers need plaster, paint, bamboo ceilings, eaves, shutters & doors to finish this school.
Ban Kok Phu: N20 04.462 E102 05.041
This school was started 2 years ago with a donation from a group of visitors who were shocked at the terrible state the old school was in.
The villagers have done a great job but do not have sufficient funds to finish. The Trust will finance the completion with the purchase of more cement for the floor and dividing walls, paint, shutters, desks and text books.
One of our largest needs are Laos language, curriculum text books. In nearly all cases not even the teacher has a copy to teach from. The books cost us only about US$3 each, but we need literally hundreds of them. If you’d like to donate specifically for books please let us know.
